A Geography Lesson

29 October 2009 18 Comments

The first winter that I lived in Colorado, I had an hour commute to work. I had this great job at a photography studio, they specialized in children’s portraits. I loved the people I worked with. I even enjoyed the commute. (Maybe that’s why I loved driving a truck so much! LOL! )

But I’ll never forget the first snow.

Never.

I drove a Mustang. My dream car. It was my boyfriends, but he let me drive it. I’m not sure why, but he did. (He put a lot of  money into making that car faster than any car on the street really should be.)

But the fact that I drove a crazy fast sports car had nothing to do with the snow that day. Or at least not why I remember it. I just loved that car, and thought it was worth a mention.

The real kicker is this. Everyone at work knew I was from Nebraska. (If you didn’t know that. Now you do. I was born and raised in Nebraska. ) But apparently… not everyone knew where Nebraska is.

I came rushing into work, slightly late because my hour long commute went through one of the busiest sections of interstate in Colorado. The first conversation I had went something like this:

(I speak in red, being that it’s the color of Nebraska’s football team and all.)

“Hey Jac, how was your drive?”
Not too bad. A little slick here and there, but not bad.
“How do you like the snow?”
I don’t mind it really.
“But I bet it’s different to drive in it, right?”
Umm… yeah, I guess.
“Are you going to call your parents and tell them about this?”
Why would I?
“I bet they’d be excited to know that you drove in snow!”
Ummm… I don’t know how to answer that. Really.

This chick really had no idea that I’d seen snow before. Not a clue that Nebraska gets snow. Later, I found out that she thought Nebraska was somewhere near Florida. Wow.

And on that note, I leave you with an adorable photo of Wuzzle
playing in the snow this morning!
Although I don’t have a photo of that fateful day
this picture is of Wuzzles first snow in Colorado
as last winter was spent on the road
Thankfully no one assumed she’d never seen snow before!

    Alicia, Thanks for stopping by!

Actually no, she just thought Nebraska was somewhere in the south and tropical. She’d actually been to my house in Colorado a few times, so she knew my daily commute. But she was such a ditz! I laugh everytime I think about how clueless she really was!

I love the new design! so crisp! That is so funny about the snow but kind of sad about her geography education. Or lack thereof. Wuzzle is so cute!

Lisa, It’s a bit sad about her geography! Thank goodness she wasn’t from Colorado. (We’d DEFINITELY be homeschooling if she were *lol*) Although I suppose maybe the schools here aren’t THAT much better.

I guess I should be glad it’s not snow here!! That might send me over the edge. :)
    Cute pic and funny story!

Christina, LOL! It’s pretty early for snow all over the place! Just drives me crazy a bit… I hope that doesn’t mean it’s a REALLY snowy winter!

Funny story. And I love the picture of Wuzzle in the snow! :) Unfortunately, it doesn’t snow around here, and I really want to make a point to take the toddler to the snow this year. He has never experienced it…

Andrea, I remember when my neighbor growing up moved to Nebraska from Tennessee. She’d never seen snow, and I couldn’t understand that. (I had no idea some places didn’t get snow! LOL! )

This photo was taken this morning? As in, THIS morning? As in, this 90 degree morning wherein I am ready to jump in my pool fully-clothed in order to somehow, some way, cool off? THAT this morning?

Oh Jac! I could cry. I love your story though. Just the other day, I drove up the coast of Florida to Nebraska…LOL

    Great post!

Hayley, Actually, I wrote it last night so it was YESTERDAY morning. *lol* But, it was still only 25* this morning. I’m SO jealous of 90 degree weather!!

Isn’t the boarder of Florida and Nebraska beautiful?? I just love how those palm trees give way to cattle ranches! LMAO!

That’s hilarious. I remember speaking to a couple from NY during hubby and I’s honeymoon. When we told them we lived in Montreal, Quebec, they asked if we lived in igloos. I told them that we only lived 1 hour North of NY State and they still thought we lived in Igloos.

    JacNo Gravatar Reply:

Maria, I’ve been to Montreal and I don’t remember seeing any igloos! *LOL* I just don’t understand people!! How on earth do they think those things? Have they never purchased a map??

My husband even gets that from dispatchers at his trucking company! The assume just because something is in Texas, it’s near Dallas. Or because we live in Colorado, it’s Denver. (They always send him to Denver when he’s going home… and they think that’s where our town is, just near Denver.)

Cute pic! I grew up in PA so I know all about driving in snow. However, now I live in SC where it snows once every 12 years. And there are so many northern transplants that you would think they would remember how to drive in the stuff. But no. EVERYone freaks out and everything closes when we have the slightest little dusting.

Enjoy your snow and your little one! Thanks for sharing!

Heather, Thanks for stopping by! I would think someplace like SC with lots of Northern transplants would be better than some places. I was in Texas during a snow a few years back and I feared for my life because everyone was so scared of how to drive. It was absolutely insane!

    Um yeah… THAT’s snow.. how funny :)

My kid really did have a friend once who was from the Dominican Republic and she never had seen snow before.. that totally tripped out my kid!!

    JacNo Gravatar Reply:

Carissa, LOL! I love kids and snow… especially if they’ve never seen it! (And kids who grow up with it can’t begin to comprehend NOT having it… LOL! )

That’s a funny story….. I find that many people don’t know their geography (usually they are from the east not knowing places in the west.)
    What a cute picture.
When we lived in Vegas, I took the kids out to experience some snow in a place it rarely falls.

Carrie, VERY true… a lot of people in the East just don’t know the West well at all. I’ve found that most people I’ve come in contact with on the East Coast have very rarely left. I have a good friend who’s never been further west than Ohio. *eek*!!
