Once in a lifetime might happen twice

9 March 2009 3 Comments

My father in law goes fishing in Canada every summer. And every year he takes someone (his kids, his siblings, his cousin, etc) with him. Two years ago, he took Hubby and I. It was the best time of my life! (Ok, at least the best Vacation. Better than my honeymoon. Seriously.)

I’d never been fishing before, so I was certain I’d hate it. I mean, fish are slimy and gross. And that’s before you have to look at one on your plate. Up until that trip, I refused to eat fish unless it was Long John Silvers! (Because the deep fried and the crunchies takes all fishy flavor away.) Then you add in that there is no cell phone or internet. And an entire week trapped with my In-Laws.

So I reluctantly jump into my Father In Law’s SUV for the twelve hour drive to Ontario. Where I find cold and rain. Then, onto this little rinky dink float plain to fly to this remote fishing lodge. It’s pouring rain, and I haven’t eaten all day. They plop Hubby and I into this little boat and send us into the middle of this huge lake with a bucket of slimy minnows and two fishing polls.

Well, I caught a fish. (The first picture above!)

I was hooked. I didn’t want to go back to the lodge that night. I would have been perfectly happy sitting on the lake well into the night. (Except it was raining. Cold. And I still hadn’t eaten.)

Over the next few days, we fished and ate. (More on the food later!) Drank LOTS of Canadian beer. And just had a blast. In fact, I caught a bass worthy of their “Big Catches” book!! (My father in law held one up for the picture above, since I still am squeamish about touching the slimy creatures!)

And the food. Oh wow. The food. I am hungry just thinking about it.

For lunch? You catch three fish per boat, then meet up with the staff and other guests on an island in this ginormous lake. They staff guts and cooks the fish. Along with these potatoes that are absolutely heaven. The yummiest thing I have ever put in my mouth.

And then dinner? Well, let me start by telling you I’m a VERY picky eater. I’ve never had anything fancy. But here? Duck L’Orange. Rack of Lamb. Smoked Salmon. And that’s just the tip of it. Plus, dessert every night.

And I can’t forget the scenery.

The view from our cabin (above) doesn’t even do it justice. This lake is HUGE. With dozens of little islands. Waterfalls. And bald eagles. Simply amazing.

Heaven on earth.

So why am I rambling on and on two years later?

We’re going again!!!!

My wonderful wonderful father in law (Are you reading this Brad?) has invited us to go again this summer. And take Wuzzle with us! I just have to convince Hubby that we *need* to go on this trip! He’s hesitant to take the time off work…)

And, before I leave you all. I should mention that the twelve hour drive with my in laws? It wasn’t bad at all! (I love my Husbands family, almost as much as my own!)

I’m so jealous! We’ve been looking at going to a fishing lodge up in BC so I’m so excited to see your new pics and stories once you go. Good luck convincing the hubby although I don’t think it will be too hard to convince a man to go fishing ;)

What a gorgeous place! I can certainly see why you were so enamored with it. There is something quite fun and peaceful about fishing. So glad to hear you’re all heading out again this summer!
